Verification: Democrats Assert White House App Includes 'Spyware'

CLAIM:

Left-wing figures and politicians have alleged that the White House app is equipped with “spyware,” specifically citing a “location tracker with NO WAY to disable it.”

VERDICT: FALSE.

A report from the tech security company NowSecure indicated that their analysis of the White House app uncovered no proof of location data being collected or transmitted.

Amid the launch of the 24-hour “Trump TV” livestream, President Donald Trump’s White House app saw a surge, reaching the top of the App Store’s news category. This came about after certain mainstream media outlets were barred from the briefing room, leading Democrats to label the app as location-tracking “spyware.”

CNN, MS NOW, and Politico recently initiated legal action against the president and top administration officials after being denied entry to the White House in response to accusations of “fake news.” A federal court has since ruled in favor of these media organizations, mandating that access to the White House be promptly restored, although the legal battle continues.

In solidarity with the affected news outlets, other broadcasters within the White House press pool, including Fox News, ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN, temporarily stopped their coverage of the White House.

The White House swiftly began its official coverage through “Trump TV: The Essentials Station,” featuring continuous streaming on its app and YouTube channel.

California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized this action as an example of “authoritarianism in action.” He expressed these sentiments on X, a social media platform.

The Lincoln Project, a group traditionally opposed to Trump, referred to him as a “communist.” Progressive commentator Dean Withers remarked, “It’s official, we live in North Korea,” reflecting a stark sentiment among critics.

Others joined in, including a former campaign hub for Vice President Kamala Harris, which likened the administration’s actions to those seen in Russia and North Korea.

Left-leaning commentator Ed Krassenstein lamented, “America is becoming hell,” amplifying the dire tone among dissenting voices.

A viral claim from a group called “GOP L’s” made unfounded assertions that the White House app harbored a location tracker that users couldn’t disable. Former New York Democrat House candidate Melanie D’Arrigo referred to the app as “Trump administration spyware.”

However, the reality is that the White House app has never collected or transmitted users’ location information, nor does it possess any form of “spyware.”

According to NowSecure, their investigation found no indications that location tracking, as suggested by critics, was taking place. They addressed concerns raised in media reports, stating:

Recent discussions surrounding the White House mobile app have exaggerated certain security and privacy issues by focusing on theoretical risks rather than actual behavior.

Our testing involved both static and dynamic mobile application security methods, and we found no signs of unauthorized location tracking as described in various reports.

The app functions like most contemporary mobile applications, using standard third-party components and adhering to typical platform controls without posing unusual risks to users.

This situation illustrates how easily misunderstandings about mobile app behavior can arise without proper testing in a practical setting.

In a conversation with a correspondent from Breitbart News, White House Deputy Communications Director Kaelan Dorr responded to concerns regarding the security of Trump TV and the app. He emphasized:

“There’s a lot of criticism about the safety of the app, and these are merely hoaxes perpetuated by fake news. In truth, the technology we use aligns with that of Fortune 500 companies,” he mentioned, citing brands like the NBA and Tiffany as examples that employ similar technology.

“So, there’s nothing to be worried about,” Dorr emphasized. “This app is remarkable, and we plan to streamline resources so that users don’t need to search excessively for information. We want to deliver information directly to you, contrasting sharply with the prior administration where inquiries about the president’s activities were often met with uncertainty.”
