Verification: Democrats Assert White House App Includes 'Spyware'

CLAIM: Left-wing figures have alleged that the White House app includes “spyware” with a location tracker that cannot be turned off.

VERDICT: FALSE. Tech security firm NowSecure has found no evidence of the White House app collecting or transmitting location data during its testing.

Recently, President Donald Trump’s White House app surged to the top of the App Store’s news category when the administration launched the continuous “Trump TV” livestream. This move came about after certain news outlets were banned from the briefing room, leading to accusations from Democrats that the app is simply a form of location-tracking “spyware.”

Last month, CNN, MS NOW, and Politico announced they would sue the president and other officials after being denied access to the White House as a consequence of what they termed “fake news” reporting. A federal judge subsequently ordered the restoration of access to these news organizations, but the legal battle is ongoing.

In a show of solidarity with the restricted outlets, broadcasters in the White House press pool, including Fox News, ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN, temporarily paused their coverage.

The White House responded quickly by launching its official coverage on “Trump TV: The Essentials Station,” featuring continuous streaming on its app and YouTube channel.

California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the actions of the Trump administration as “authoritarianism in action.”

Meanwhile, The Lincoln Project, a group of former Trump opponents, labeled the president a “communist.”

Progressive commentator Dean Withers expressed his frustration with a remark about living in a state akin to North Korea.

The former campaign hub for Kamala Harris, known as “Kamala HQ,” also stated that the Trump administration’s actions were comparable to those of Russia and North Korea.

Left-leaning commentator Ed Krassenstein described the situation in America as transforming into “hell.”

There was even a viral claim from “GOP L’s” that the White House app had a location tracker that could not be disabled.

A defeated Democratic House candidate, Melanie D’Arrigo, branded the app as “Trump administration spyware.”

However, the reality is that the White House app has not transmitted users’ location information, nor does it include “spyware.”

NowSecure conducted an analysis of the app, which showed no evidence of unauthorized location tracking, countering the claims made by left-wing figures:

Reports about the White House mobile app have exaggerated security and privacy concerns by focusing on potential risks rather than actual functionality.

NowSecure’s examination, utilizing both static and dynamic security testing, revealed no signs of location tracking as described in media reports. The app’s behavior is typical of modern mobile applications, utilizing standard third-party components and adhering to usual platform controls. It does not present an unusual risk for users.

This showcases how easy it is to misinterpret mobile app behavior without proper testing in a genuine environment.

In an interview with Breitbart News, White House Deputy Communications Director Kaelan Dorr addressed critics of Trump TV and the app’s security concerns, labeling them as “fake news hoaxes.” He emphasized, “Much of the technology we use parallels what Fortune 500 companies employ,” mentioning brands like the NBA and Tiffany that rely on similar tech for their applications.

“There’s really nothing to worry about,” Dorr concluded. “This app is fantastic, and we’re excited to integrate features of America.gov. We’re focused on restoring the dignity of the American public, making all information easily accessible in one place, contrasting sharply with the past administration where accessing information felt like begging.”
