Tragic Case of Emily Schwartz Ferlazzo Unfolds
Joseph Ferlazzo returned alone from what seemed to be a celebration of his first wedding anniversary with his wife, Emily Schwartz Ferlazzo, after a camping trip in Vermont. The 41-year-old claimed that Emily had gone back to New Hampshire, a statement that left her family feeling skeptical.
Adrian Bass, Emily’s mother, described a strange encounter with Ferlazzo. She recalled feeling uncomfortable as he handed her Emily’s license, noting that his behavior was odd. “It felt as if he was on edge, like he was trying to make something up,” she reflected. Now, in hindsight, she suspects he may have been dishonest.
This tragic story is being explored in the investigation series “Fatal Destination,” narrated by Jessica Biel. The show includes insights from family, friends, and law enforcement, trying to piece together what happened during that fateful trip.
Bass shared her deep-seated fear of Ferlazzo, expressing that he often seemed menacing towards her daughter. Emily would confide in her family about seeking help, only to return to her husband, which caused tension. “I knew he had a violent side; it was troubling,” Bass said, looking back.
Moreover, there were red flags even leading up to their anniversary. The day before, the couple had a public lunch celebrating their marriage, which ended with an altercation. Emily reached out for help, revealing bruises in the aftermath.
“It kind of puts you in a tough spot,” her stepfather David remarked. The family felt they had to tread carefully when discussing Emily’s marriage, fearing that their words might escalate the situation.
On October 18, 2021, Ferlazzo returned without Emily and claimed during an argument, she tried to leave, forcing him to restrain her. After that, he insisted he went to the store, leaving her behind, and admitted he had a troubling relationship with her, characterized by violence and manipulation.
The Bass family reported Emily missing, informing the police about the history of domestic violence they had witnessed. While they hoped for the best, Adrian Bass soon feared the worst—there were three scenarios to her mind: Emily could be injured, in some kind of amnesiac state, or worse, dead.
Eventually, Ferlazzo confessed to shooting Emily during an argument in their campervan, claiming it was a moment of heated passion. The aftermath was horrific; he even dismembered her body to dispose of it.
In court, the family was heartbroken as they listened to the details surrounding the incident. Ferlazzo was sentenced to 42.5 years in prison, yet the pain remains fresh for Emily’s family.
In the wake of this tragedy, they take solace in her musical recordings and hope that sharing Emily’s story raises awareness about domestic violence. “She loved to sing; that was her essence,” David noted.
Adrian Bass urges others in similar situations to trust their instincts and seek help if they feel in danger. “If you’re in an abusive relationship, reach out,” she said. “You’re not alone; help is available.”
The episode, titled “Where is Emily?”, aired on June 10th and aims to keep the conversation about domestic violence alive.
