Vessel with 200 passengers collides with the Brooklyn Bridge while search and rescue efforts are in progress

Mexican Navy Ship Hits Brooklyn Bridge

A tall sailing vessel from the Mexican Navy collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night, according to reports from firefighters and other sources.

It appears that one of the 147-foot masts of the Cuauhtémoc struck the bridge shortly before 9 p.m. This vessel reportedly had around 200 people aboard.

Following the incident, those injured were being transported to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, while individuals in critical condition were sent to local hospitals for urgent care.

Footage from the scene captured the moment the mast crashed down onto the bridge, startling onlookers in the park on the Brooklyn side, who could be heard exclaiming, “Oh, it!”—it’s a reaction you might expect in such a shocking situation.

Built in Spain in 1982, this ship is part of an upcoming event called Sail 4th, which will celebrate America’s 250th birthday next year. I think it’s fascinating how these historical vessels connect us to significant events, even if something unexpected like this happens.
