Veteran Action Endorses Sen. Dan Sullivan in Alaska Senate Race
Veteran Action has announced its support for Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-AK) in the ongoing Senate race in Alaska, highlighting his commitment to America’s veterans in an exclusive advertisement. The organization positions itself as a proponent of America First policies, aimed at enhancing national security and providing steadfast support for veterans.
The ad promotes Sen. Sullivan as he competes against former Democratic Congresswoman Mary Peltola and fellow Republican Dan Sullivan. It’s a bit humorous, really, that they’re running against a candidate with the same name.
In the advertisement, Veteran Action emphasizes Sullivan’s military background, stating, “Thirty years in the Marine Corps, recalled to active duty twice, including a tour in Afghanistan dismantling terrorist networks.” They also point out his efforts, such as co-sponsoring the Veterans Access Act, aimed at ensuring veterans receive the care they deserve and supporting the Veterans Bill of Rights which focuses on accountability at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Sullivan, who is a member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee (SVAC), helped introduce the Protecting Regular Order (PRO) for Veterans Act in the Senate, celebrating its passage last year. He expressed that “America’s veterans, who’ve served and sacrificed greatly for our country, deserve a Department of Veterans Affairs that is held to the highest possible standard of accountability,” particularly after a recent budget crisis exposed shortcomings within the agency.
He further elaborated on the need for accountability, thanking his Senate colleagues for helping to establish measures that demand transparency in the VA’s budgeting, such as having quarterly reports to Congress. Sullivan emphasized the importance of safeguarding veterans’ benefits amidst budget challenges.
His office has laid out a timeline related to efforts for accountability within the VA, which includes instances of budget shortfalls and the subsequent actions taken by Senators Sullivan and Kevin Cramer (R-ND) to demand hearings and introduce the PRO Vets Act. Despite attempts, the act faced obstacles, particularly from Senate Democrats.
Beyond the PRO Vets Act, Sullivan has shown support for other initiatives like the ACCESS Act and the Veterans Bill of Rights.
Mark Lucas, the founder and president of Veteran Action, stated, “Veteran Action endorses Dan Sullivan because he leads from the front on veterans policy. As a Marine, he never stopped serving.” This endorsement arrives shortly after Veteran Action also voiced its support for Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA), labeling her as another advocate for veterans’ issues.
