Martin Maldonado Retires After 15-Year Career

Martin Maldonado has announced his retirement after a 15-year journey with the Houston Astros, which included six notable seasons and a World Series title. He shared this news via Instagram on Saturday.

In a heartfelt video, Maldonado reflected on his path, starting from his childhood home in Puerto Rico to his debut with the Milwaukee Brewers. He highlighted memorable moments such as his first Grand Slam and his Gold Glove award in 2017, while displaying jerseys from the various teams he played for.

“Baseball, I fell in love with you when I was only 4 years old,” Maldonado wrote in the video’s caption. “From the moment I donned the catcher’s gear for the first time, I knew this game would be part of my life forever. Every inning, every pitch, every moment behind the plate has been a blessing. I had the honor of wearing that gear for 34 years, with the last 15 at the highest level. Today, it’s time to hang it up and officially say goodbye.”

Maldonado was a 27th-round pick by the Angels in 2004 and spent his initial six seasons with the Brewers before moving to the Angels and finishing the 2018 season with the Astros.

He played for the Royals and Cubs in 2019, later returning to Houston, where he continued until the end of the 2023 season.

During his time with the Astros, he contributed to three no-hitters and celebrated a World Series victory in 2022. He wrapped up his career boasting a batting average of .203, an OPS of .620, and 119 home runs.

This past season, he played with the San Diego Padres, participating in 64 games after joining the team under a minor league contract in late August.

In his Instagram message, Maldonado expressed gratitude to his wife, Janelise, and his children, Anaya, Aiden, and Gianna. “What a journey we have lived together,” he wrote. “Thank you for your love, patience, and unwavering support through the highs and lows. Your sacrifices over the years have allowed me to chase a dream that started in childhood and became a family journey.”

He reminisced about their experiences traveling, celebrating victories, and learning from losses together. “You were the heart of my home and the strength that supported me throughout it all. I love you with all my heart.”

Furthermore, Maldonado acknowledged his parents and siblings for laying “the foundation to live this dream.” He hinted throughout the video that he’s interested in playing for Puerto Rico in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, alongside two previous tournaments in 2013 and 2023.
