Veteran Democratic operative admits to being behind fake Biden robocall: Report

Veteran Democratic operative Steve Cramer has admitted to being behind President Biden’s fake robocalls made to New Hampshire voters last month, according to a statement given to NBC News.

“On the evening of Sunday, January 20th, two days before the New Hampshire primary, I sent an automated call to the 5,000 people most likely to vote Democratic. Using easy-to-use online technology, Joe An automated version of President Biden’s voice has been created. Kramer said in a statement: Go to NBC News.

NBC News Initial reports on Friday said that Mr. Cramer hired magician Paul Carpenter to create an artificial intelligence (AI)-generated robocall that imitated Mr. Biden’s voice ahead of the New Hampshire primary. . NBC’s report mentions text messages, call logs, and Venmo transactions.

In a statement published Sunday, Kramer said more enforcement is needed to prevent others from following in his footsteps.

“With an investment of just $500, anyone can recreate my purposeful call,” Kramer said in a statement. “Immediate action is required across all regulatory bodies and platforms.”

NBC News reported that Cramer did not say he was instructed to make robocalls by his then-client, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.), who is challenging Biden for the Democratic nomination. That’s what it means.

Mr. Phillips’ presidential campaign announced that Mr. Cramer served as a consultant to help collect signatures in Pennsylvania and New York. Mr. Phillips and his campaign condemned Mr. Kramer’s alleged involvement, saying that if true, his actions “have nothing to do with our campaign.”

“The fundamental tenets of our campaign are the importance of competition, choice and democracy,” the campaign said Friday. “We are outraged to learn that Mr. Kramer is allegedly behind this call, and if the allegations are true, we categorically condemn his actions.”

Phillips made similar comments, telling NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo on Friday that he did not know the consultant.

“And first of all, let me condemn this,” Phillips said in an interview with Cuomo on Friday’s show. “I don’t know the consultant guy who did this. He was repulsed. I think it’s disgusting. It’s necessary. [artificial intelligence] Because this is happening all around us all the time. ”

Phillips’ campaign reiterated its previous response when asked for comment on the NBC report.

“Our campaign repeatedly condemns these calls and any efforts to suppress the vote,” the campaign said in a statement.

Carpenter said in an interview with NBC that he made the call but did not broadcast it. In his statement, Kramer told NBC that the call was created “using a specific script of my choosing.”

“I was in a situation where someone offered me money to do something, and I did it. There was no malicious intent,” Carpenter said. “I didn’t know how to distribute it.”

In the fake robocall, Biden can be heard telling voters to “save your vote” for the November election instead of the Jan. 23 primary.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office said at the time of the report that it was investigating. The Federal Communications Commission banned the use of AI-generated voices in robocalls weeks after Biden’s robocalls were made.
