Veteran referee criticizes 'crazy' choice to suspend SEC official

SEC Suspends Referee Ken Williamson Amid Controversy

In light of recent news, the Southeastern Conference has reportedly “permanently suspended” referee Ken Williamson, who was in charge of officiating the game between Auburn and Georgia on October 11. This has sparked a significant reaction from Terry McCauley, a seasoned football referee and current NBC rules analyst.

McCauley verified the suspension during a broadcast on X, saying that there were eleven complaints filed against Williamson and his crew, with nine being substantiated by conference authorities.

Interestingly, McCauley seemed to have a change of heart, calling out Auburn’s athletic director John Cohen for what he deemed “disgraceful conduct” towards the officiating staff during Auburn’s 20-10 defeat to Georgia.

“This is insane. Ken is a very good referee and has been for a very long time,” McCauley stated. He pointed out that while Auburn’s performance may have been lacking, the struggles that officials face are not unlike those of coaches and players. It’s a tough job on both sides, really.

He expressed his hope for a scenario where athletic directors face similar repercussions for their actions, particularly when a player flops or when decisions lead to poor game management. “I’m looking forward to the day when an AD is held accountable,” he remarked.

McCauley further stressed that if the suspension were based solely on that single game, it would reflect poorly on everyone involved. He highlighted a persistent issue—conferences overseeing officiating might be detrimental, reflecting a deeper flaw in college football.

In one of his tweets, he questioned whether there would be any consequences for Cohen’s outburst directed at a referee, referencing a moment when Cohen was seen confronting an official post-play.

Auburn’s head coach Hugh Freeze later stated that his coaching staff believed their quarterback had scored on a fumble, raising questions about the officiating decisions.

In another tweet, McCauley noted that Cohen seemed to wield significant influence over Williamson’s career due to perceived disrespect toward him and his team.

Fans and commentators have observed that Auburn (3-3) has faced dubious officiating in several recent games, with Freeze admitting a lack of rest and concentration. When asked if it appeared that one team benefitted more from officiating, McCauley addressed this directly.

“The only significant calls that reflected on the umpires were the targeting failure and other incorrect decisions against Auburn,” he explained. While he acknowledged that mistakes were made, he emphasized that replay upheld the right calls in critical moments towards the end of the game.

McCauley suggested that the SEC officiating team might consider appealing Williamson’s suspension this weekend. He advocated for all officials to stand in solidarity, even proposing that games be delayed as a show of support.

Notably, just a month earlier, SEC officials had admitted to a significant error made during Oklahoma State’s victory against Auburn, revealing a pattern of scrutiny surrounding officiating decisions this season.
