Several students recorded parts of the fight, which began around 12.30pm during the lunch break on Wednesday, the paper said. Concerned parents also shared videos of the altercation on social media, it added.
Leon County School District officials told the paper that the fight started when a student attacked a hallway monitor and stole his cellphone.
According to the paper, video of the fight shows a large group of students in the cafeteria surrounding the woman and the student, both on the ground and struggling, with the woman appearing to kick the student. Several students managed to break up the fight and separate the two, but when the student left, the woman looked for the student, found him and began fighting again, pulling the student's hair while the student punched the woman, the paper said. School officials confirmed to the paper that the video shows the end of the fight.
The student was arrested and taken to the Leon Juvenile Detention Center, where he was charged with attempted robbery by snatch and assault on a school employee, both felonies, the paper reported.
“We are still reviewing the video and the investigation remains ongoing,” LCSO Public Information Officer Shonda Knight added to the paper.
The boy could face up to expulsion under the school district's student conduct code, the paper said.
School officials have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, the newspaper said.
According to the newspaper, Vice Principal Jennifer Tibbits sent an email to parents through the school system's FOCUS portal at 1:50 p.m. Thursday informing them about the fight.
“There was an incident involving a student and staff member during lunch today. Other school staff and school security responded immediately. This incident is being investigated by the Leon County Sheriff's Office and will be addressed appropriately,” the message said, according to the newspaper.
Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil, Superintendent Rocky Hanna and school board members spoke Wednesday before the brawl. tour The newspaper said the district's high school principal plans to visit Lincoln High School to discuss safety and security concerns with students, with a visit scheduled for Friday. It's unclear what the status of the visit is given the circumstances of the fight.
