Spurs Defeat Nets with Stellar Performance by Wembanyama
San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama showcased why he’s dubbed “Alien” and “Extraterrestrial” as they triumphed over the Brooklyn Nets with a score of 118-107 on Sunday.
Just before halftime, Wembanyama pulled off a breathtaking play that stunned the fans. The Spurs were leading by 18 points when Nets forward Nick Claxton attempted a jumper. With only 40.1 seconds remaining, Wembanyama blocked Claxton’s shot. Then, when Terrence Mann tried to score off an offensive rebound, he too was thwarted by Wembanyama’s defense.
Following a missed shot on the second offensive rebound, Wembanyama seized the ball, dribbled it up court, and sunk a 3-pointer, which was quite impressive.
This performance typified the game’s nature for the Spurs. Wembanyama ended with 31 points, 14 rebounds, six blocks, four assists, and three steals. Remarkably, this marks the 23rd time in his career that he has achieved six or more blocks in a game.
In a notable achievement, the NBA revealed that Wembanyama has become the first player ever to score at least 100 points and accumulate at least 15 blocks in the opening three games of a season. Previously, he scored 40 points with three blocks against the Dallas Mavericks and 29 points alongside nine blocks against the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Spurs now boast a 3-0 record to start the season.
On the other hand, Nets guard Cam Thomas had a standout moment as well, scoring 40 points on 11-of-25 shooting, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win against San Antonio.
