Awkward Moment at Fanatics Fest with Victor Wembanyama

A rather funny and awkward moment happened over the weekend at Fanatics Fest involving Spurs player Victor Wembanyama and a young New York Knicks fan.

As Wembanyama strolled past a crowd of attendees, a young fan eagerly shouted, “Wenby! Wenby! Please sign my jersey! … Wenby… can you sign my jersey?”

At first, it seemed like a standard request. But, of course, there was a twist. The fan was holding out a Knicks jersey. Not just any jersey—he was asking Wembanyama to sign a Jalen Brunson jersey.

The interaction caught attention as Wembanyama, smiling and amused, responded, “No, that’s not… that’s Jalen Brunson.” He declined to sign the jersey, prompting the young fan to apologize after the awkward exchange.

Wembanyama was among many NBA stars present at the Fanatics Fest held at the Javits Center in New York. This was his second year attending the event, and he notably became the first to hit 5 out of 5 in the 3-point challenge. He also took part in a podcast discussing his admiration for Paris Saint-Germain and stars like Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi.

Interestingly, despite his skills, Wembanyama’s Spurs were eliminated by the Knicks in just five games during the NBA playoffs that year. This didn’t seem to be forgotten by the enthusiastic local fans at the festival.

During the NBA Finals, Wembanyama faced playful boos from the New York crowd, who jokingly labeled him one of their latest “villains.”

Wembanyama was a critical figure throughout the playoff series, often drawing attention, sometimes stirring controversy along the way, especially whenever calls went unmade against him.

Brunson was also in attendance at the festival, accompanied by several Knicks teammates, including Josh Hart and Karl-Anthony Towns. Other NBA stars like Kevin Durant and James Harden made their way to New York for this much-anticipated event.
