The San Antonio Spurs were one of the big winners of the 2025 NBA trade deadline, landing De'aaron Fox, and Victor Wembanyma finally got the help he needed. The Spurs are still two games from the play-in tournament at the Western Conference and are gearing up for a fierce season-ending battle between several hopeless teams for the final postseason spot. Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns Even in a mix.
Wenbanyama had a rare off-night when the Spurs took over the Charlotte Hornets on the road on Friday night, but he does something surprising, even though he struggles. Earlier in the third quarter, Charlotte forward Daquan Jeffries went to Wenby and tried to throw a floater over him. It's not going to work against a man with a literal 8-foot wingspan.
Wenbanyama casually blocked Jeffries without leaving his leg. Hornets announcer Eric Collins (one of the best in the business) lost his heart at what he just saw. Only Wenby could pull this off. Watch the play here:
The Hornets defeated Spurs 117-116 when the Fox game winner was abandoned because they came after the buzzer.
Wenbanyama finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and five blocks, but shot only a 9th from the 3-point range in 7 innings from the field. Fox (22 points) and Stephon Castle (33 points) both looked great as San Antonio attempted to establish a deadline for new identity after the trade.
The Spurs are not there yet, but they'll soon. These three attempts will pay off Wembanyama in the long run, even if they could be frustrating for now.
