Surveillance footage showed a man igniting a significant fire outside the Federal Building in New York City on Monday. Police say he attempted to escape on foot but was quickly apprehended.
The Department of Homeland Security labeled him as a protester against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Images from the scene revealed a cart bearing the message “ICE OFF OUR Streets.”
A federal employee and a bystander sustained minor injuries during the incident.
FBI Director Kash Patel provided updates via social media, stating, “This morning, an individual planted an incendiary device outside 26 Federal Plaza. That individual is in custody.” He noted that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating the event.
DHS reported that the suspect set off fireworks and spilled a flammable liquid, likely gasoline, igniting a fire near the building.
“FPS protective security personnel rapidly subdued the instigator, who received minor injuries,” the statement clarified. “Officers recovered the individual’s bag, which contained two pellet guns and what seemed to be a manifesto. EMS, FBI, and NYPD are on the scene.”
Two law enforcement sources mentioned that the suspect, identified as Andrew Aravaca, was carrying materials opposing ICE during the incident.
Footage showing smoke coming from the site and the response from police circulated widely on social media.
New York City’s Mayor, Zoran Mamdani, released a statement condemning the attack, expressing relief that injuries were not severe and affirming that the suspect is in custody. He assured that his administration is cooperating with the NYPD and will focus on keeping New Yorkers safe.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also weighed in, asserting that terrorist acts and violence are unacceptable and should be prosecuted fully.
