Surfing Instructor Saves Drowning Girl on California Beach

A quick-thinking surfing instructor intervened to save a drowning girl at a Southern California beach recently. The incident, captured on video, involved Lucas Taub, 28, who came to the aid of Coco Green, 6, and her father, Chris Green, as they struggled against the waves during a surfing competition.

Coco was in distress, calling out for help as she and her father found themselves caught in rough waters. Fortunately, Taub was in the right place at the right time to act quickly.

He managed to bring both Coco and Chris safely back to shore. Taub, who has been surfing and coaching for the last eight years, reflected on how chance led him to assist the girl.

“I usually coach from the sand on competition days, but since I was on vacation, I chose to coach from the rocks this time,” he explained.

After spending the weekend at the beach, Taub realized that a five-minute decision to relocate could have been critical in this life-or-death situation.

“Within three to five minutes of standing on the rocks, I could see the girl bobbing in the water,” he recounted. He leaped into the ocean, aware that time was of the essence.

Chris Green, the father, later shared that he was about 100 meters away when he saw his daughter, who couldn’t swim, being pulled out to sea.

The frantic father ran towards the water, but by the time he arrived, he was too exhausted to help. “So my dad said if I jump off the rock, I’ll be like a guardian angel,” Taub noted.

Eventually, lifeguards reached them on the beach and attended to Coco, who had swallowed a significant amount of water. Thankfully, both were deemed fine without the need for further medical attention.

Despite this frightening experience, Coco expressed a desire to return to the beach and isn’t afraid of the water. When she’s ready, Taub plans to give her surfing lessons.

“I don’t consider myself a hero,” he said modestly. “Just a normal person doing what’s right. We’re here to look out for one another.”
