Video captures family of six being pitched from their boat by a huge wave

Recent video footage captured a frightening scene where a family of six was violently tossed from a boat caused by a large wave near West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz.

This alarming incident was filmed by a bystander who noticed the boat abruptly veer into a massive wave, heading towards the shore. Initially, the boat was stable, but soon it capsized, throwing the family, which included four children, into the water.

A group of surfers, among them Darryl “Free” Virostko, a three-time champion of the Mavericks Competition, witnessed the drama unfold and quickly paddled to assist the family.

In a post on Instagram, Virostko recounted the moment: “I was out there avoiding a big set of waves when a boat came by. I saw the family loading up, then suddenly they plowed into those big waves, and I realized I had to act fast to help.” He noted the urgency, feeling it was a critical moment to save them.

“Surprisingly, the kids made it out unharmed,” he shared, also mentioning that a fellow surfer lent a hand in the rescue effort.

Virostko remarked that none of the adults were wearing life jackets, making it tough to keep afloat amidst the crashing waves.

He explained how the father was frantically calling out for his children, but there was a language barrier complicating the situation. Thankfully, all four kids were rescued safely.

The Santa Cruz Fire Department reported that they responded to a “confirmed water rescue” in that location.

According to the department’s release, thanks to the prompt response from Santa Cruz Fire and Marine Rescue, lifeguards, and several surfers, all six family members were successfully saved from what could have been a tragic incident.

The family was then transported to the Santa Cruz harbor, where they received medical attention from the Central Fire Brigade and AMR units, later being taken to a local hospital for further care.

Virostko finished his post with a reflection on the strength of the surfing community, emphasizing teamwork in such critical situations.

Remarkably, police confirmed that among the surfers involved in the rescue, a few were as young as 14 years old.
