UPS Plane Crash in Kentucky

A series of crashes unfolded in Kentucky on Tuesday, with surveillance footage from local businesses capturing the moment when a massive fireball erupted.

Video from Kentucky Truck Parts & Service shows UPS Flight 2976 descending from the top right of the frame before crashing, producing a loud bang that shook the surveillance cameras.

The plane had just taken off from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport shortly before sunset when flames from the crash ignited multiple fires in an industrial area nearby, leading authorities to suspend operations for the night.

Tragically, the accident claimed the lives of seven individuals, including three from the aircraft, and left eleven people injured on the ground.

In a statement, UPS expressed its deep sorrow over the incident in Louisville.

The National Transportation Safety Board is spearheading the investigation and has dispatched a team to the crash site. The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 was en route to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, and at the time of the incident, it had over 200,000 pounds of fuel on board.

According to FAA records examined by Reuters, the aircraft was 34 years old.

UPS alerted that its air and international package delivery schedules might experience disruptions due to this incident.

As of Wednesday morning, Louisville Airport, which is home to UPS Worldport, reported that it was capable of operating aircraft, though they cautioned travelers to keep an eye on flight statuses due to potential delays and cancellations stemming from the previous day’s events.

Interestingly, UPS stands as Louisville’s largest employer, providing 26,000 jobs, as noted by Louisville Business First.
