Video footage captured the intense moment when a SWAT team used its vehicle to ram into a tractor during a standoff with a man suspected of a shooting spree near an Oregon residence.
Erik Gordon Shunn, 53, apparently targeted several tree workers on Saturday afternoon, just south of Portland, before engaging with law enforcement, as stated by the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO). During the whole episode, he reportedly fired over 200 rounds.
A drone operated by the CCSO recorded Shunn firing at the aircraft, according to officials.
Later, while Shunn was trying to drive a compact tractor close to his house, a CCSO SWAT vehicle hit the tractor, pinning it against the building. Following this, several SWAT team members exited their vehicle to apprehend Shunn.
The CCSO received reports about an armed neighbor who was shooting at workers hired to remove trees in a rural area. The 911 caller suggested that Shunn may have been armed with multiple weapons, and witnesses estimated he discharged around 20 rounds at the tree workers.
When law enforcement arrived, Shunn was spotted in his driveway by drones. He was apparently trying to knock down trees with the tractor, possibly attempting to build a barricade.
Ultimately, authorities decided to immobilize Shunn’s tractor once he became separated from his rifle while driving it near the front of his home.
“SWAT personnel took this chance since they believed it offered the best chance to safely apprehend Shunn,” said CCSO officials.
After being taken into custody, Shunn was treated before being evaluated at a local hospital.
First responders also checked the welfare of nearby residents and tree workers, ensuring their safety and evacuating them from the vicinity, according to CCSO. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries, and Shunn’s mother, who was present during the incident, also remained unharmed.
Shunn faces multiple charges, including second-degree attempted murder, first-degree attempted assault, and unlawful possession of firearms, among others. He is currently being held without bail at the Clackamas County Jail.
