Tragic Playground Assault in Bronx
It seems that, at least for one witness, capturing the moment on a mobile phone was more important than calling 911.
In a disturbing incident, a group of teenagers attacked 14-year-old Angel Mendoza at Williams Bridge Oval Playground in Norwood late Tuesday. Reports indicate he was badly beaten and assaulted with a weapon. This brutal attack, described as a form of revenge connected to a previous altercation, involved individuals not related to Mendoza himself.
Authorities arrested four teenagers—Andrew Ansa, 18; Jordan Williams, 18; and two others aged 15 and 16—who cannot be named due to their minor status. Two additional suspects are still at large.
Police are looking into whether there are ties between the suspects and the Trinitarios gang. This gang, which was infamously behind the 2018 murder of 15-year-old Lesandro “Junior” Guzman Feliz, seems to have a history of brutal violence. Like before, the horrifying moments of this attack were likely recorded either by gang members or bystanders, but exact details remain unclear as law enforcement has yet to release any footage.
Interestingly, while video evidence has been crucial for police in the past, it appears that witnesses sometimes prioritize recording instead of intervening or seeking help. A recent incident in Cincinnati involved around 100 bystanders, but curiously, only one person called for police assistance during the attack.
Angel was close friends with one of the individuals from the initial fight, according to law enforcement. His family mentioned that he frequently visited the park to play basketball but had recently started to exhibit rebellious behavior, possibly influenced by peers. His father expressed concerns, saying Angel was a good kid but often followed his friends’ lead.
When the paramedics found him injured at the playground around 7:30 PM, he was quickly transported to Jacobi Medical Center. It’s a tragic reminder of the unpredictability and danger that can lurk in seemingly safe spaces.
