Concerns About Credit Card Safety at Gas Pumps
Videos making the rounds on social media have raised alarms regarding the safety of credit card information at gas pumps, with claims that scammers are using microchips embedded in stickers to siphon off personal details. The local news team at News 8 is digging into these assertions.
Several videos on Facebook have shown fraudsters suggesting that gas pump stickers can be used to steal information from customers’ chip cards, insinuating that these stickers house microchips designed for the task. After conducting several days of research, investigators found no evidence supporting these claims. This suggests the idea may not hold water.
A close inspection of the sticker revealed no signs of microchips inside or on it, even after peeling and flipping it over.
News 8 reached out to two payment processing experts working with gas stations, and neither were aware of any chip technology that could fit within the stickers showcased in these videos.
It’s worth noting that credit card chip technology generates a unique transaction code for each purchase, which further minimizes the risk of fraud.
To stay safe, always scrutinize your payment device for anything suspicious. Look for any unusual stickers or attachments near the card reader slot where you’re supposed to insert your card.
Maintaining your credit card security is crucial. As long as credit cards exist, scammers are likely to keep trying to steal information.
