A wild incident has come to light involving a drunken DoorDash driver who ended up in a physical altercation with a customer’s grandfather.
Anthony Volno was enjoying breakfast with his grandson at their home in Vancouver, Washington, when the driver unexpectedly banged on their front door. He claimed he had not received his tip from a grocery order delivered the night before.
“As soon as I opened the door, I could smell alcohol,” Volno recalled. “I was actually considering giving him a few bucks, but when he insisted again, ‘I want my tip,’ I thought, ‘Uh-oh, I need you to leave.’”
A scuffle broke out when the driver resisted leaving. Volno then had a moment of realization that the situation could be dangerous.
“I felt something hard in his waistband, and when I discovered it was a gun, my heart just dropped,” he shared.
“I realized at that moment, I had to get that gun away from him. It was really life or death for me.”
He managed to wrestle the firearm from the driver, pushing him back into their car as footage from a doorbell camera captured the chaotic moment.
Both individuals called 911 after the altercation, leading to the arrest of the 59-year-old driver, Robert Derehunt, who now faces charges including felony harassment and DUI.
Fortunately, no injuries occurred during this alarming encounter.
“I could’ve been shot, or my kids could’ve been hurt. It’s shocking to think about,” Volno remarked.
His daughter also mentioned that she had already reported the driver through the DoorDash app, but he was insistent on receiving cash.
“He shouldn’t decide that I owe him a cash tip for someone else’s delivery,” Volno expressed.
DoorDash confirmed that Derehunt was indeed a driver for the service and reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on harassment.
“What happened is unacceptable, and he has been promptly removed from the platform,” the company stated.
