Tragic Incident on Charlotte Light Rail
An unsettling video has surfaced, capturing the last moments of a Ukrainian refugee, Iryna Zarutska, before she was fatally stabbed aboard a Charlotte Light Rail train on August 22nd. The footage, released by the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS), shows the 23-year-old riding the Lynx Blue Line around 9:45 PM. In the video, Zarutska is seen wearing a pizzeria uniform, absorbed in her phone while a man in a red hoodie sits behind her.
Approximately four minutes into the footage, the man suddenly pulls a knife and stabs Zarutska three times, with at least one wound to her neck. After fleeing conflict in Ukraine, Zarutska grabs her neck, and blood spills onto the floor. Authorities declared her dead at the scene.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Decarlos Brown, is seen walking through the train, removing his sweatshirt, and standing by the door as other passengers look on. He was arrested shortly after the attack and was hospitalized before being charged with murder.
Brown has a long criminal history, including felony theft and weapon-related offenses. According to police, he and Zarutska did not know each other, making the attack appear random.
Zarutska’s tragic death has reignited discussions about public safety in Charlotte, particularly concerns about violence related to the city’s transportation system. Local leaders are calling for action in light of this incident.
Representative Brenden Jones criticized the circumstances surrounding Zarutska’s death, suggesting that political agendas have overshadowed public safety for far too long. He expressed that violent offenders feel untouchable, instilling fear in communities.
