Video: Knicks Fan Throws Away Trash to Take Hand-Painted Can

A woman is facing backlash online after she dumped the contents of the New York Knicks’ trash can onto the street and walked away with it.

The exact timing of the incident isn’t clear, but reports indicated that the city’s sanitation department collaborated with a clothing brand to unveil hand-painted trash cans honoring the Knicks’ NBA championship in advance of a ticker tape parade.

A video clip showed the woman emptying garbage onto the sidewalk as onlookers reacted. She then took the trash can with her, leaving a significant mess behind.

“What are you doing?” one person shouted, while another echoed their disapproval. As she walked off, the scene unfolded.

Many social media users quickly expressed their opinions. One commentator pointed out the stark contrast in cultural behavior, referencing Japanese World Cup fans who clean up after matches, stating, “Culture matters.”

Another user remarked, “They finally got something to celebrate, and their instinct was to take city property. The can matches their jersey, so I think they feel it belongs to them.” Others chimed in, suggesting that since championship merchandise was sold out, this was a creative way to capture some of the excitement.

Another comment noted, “Well, it’s a socialist/communist city now. I guess she didn’t pay for it, but someone else did.”

This incident surfaced shortly after the Knicks’ celebratory events devolved into chaos in Times Square, where people set off fireworks and vandalized property, including school buses. A teenager was reportedly injured in the mayhem, highlighting the disorder even as officials urged attendees to be responsible.

Additional reports indicated that further disturbances occurred in Manhattan when police confined Knicks fans inside a subway station prior to the parade. Thousands camped out on the streets for prime viewing spots, but complications arose as viewing areas filled to capacity, leaving many fans stranded.
