Record-Breaking Home Run Comes with a Cost for Joshua Kuroda-Grauer
Infielder Joshua Kuroda-Grauer had a notable moment on Monday while playing against the Arizona Diamondbacks, as he possibly set a record. However, it came with a considerable trade-off.
The Athletics player had just hit his first Major League Baseball home run when disaster struck in the fifth inning.
In a rather unfortunate turn of events, Kuroda-Grauer took a wide swing and foul-tipped the ball, which struck him in a very vulnerable area. Generally, foul balls usually land harmlessly near the batter’s box, or at worst, hit a foot or leg. This time, though, it was different.
Initially, Kuroda-Grauer collapsed to his knees in apparent agony and remained on the ground for a few moments before managing to stand up. Despite the pain, he showcased impressive resilience by hitting a single into the right field seats shortly after.
Although he could have continued playing defense in the bottom of the inning, reports indicated that he left the game in the sixth inning. He was subsequently taken to the hospital for emergency surgery due to a ruptured testicle.
His determination to keep playing, even after such an injury, did not go unnoticed. Athletics manager Mark Coetzee remarked that it was quite possibly unheard of for a player to endure such an injury yet remain in the game, especially to get a hit and defend for half an inning. He emphasized Kuroda-Grauer’s grit and passion for the sport, calling it remarkable.
Coetzee reflected on the unfortunate timing of the injury, mentioning that Kuroda Grauer had just made his MLB debut at the end of June and had played only 16 games, maintaining an impressive .417 batting average with 25 hits in 60 at-bats.
Meanwhile, the Athletics were struggling in the American League, and Kuroda-Grauer’s injury added more frustration to the team’s challenges. The team was reeling from a slump in late June, losing 14 of 15 games. Losing their rising star only compounded the difficulties.
The A’s managed to lose the game to the Diamondbacks, finishing with a score of 5-2.
On a positive note, Kuroda-Grauer is reportedly recovering well in the hospital, though he has had to spend a second night there. Coetzee humorously noted that he would soon return to Sacramento.
In an unexpected twist, Kuroda-Grauer is expected to be on the injured list for just ten days after surgery, possibly returning to action in early August. Coetzee added that while there isn’t a strict timeline, he is grateful that Kuroda-Grauer is on the mend and that the injury shouldn’t have lasting effects on his life.
