Amy Poehler Thanks Robert De Niro for His Outspokenness Against Trump

Former Saturday Night Live cast member Amy Poehler expressed her admiration for actor Robert De Niro, particularly for his passionate criticism of President Donald Trump.

Poehler sat down with the Goodfellas star for an hour on her podcast, Good Hang, but as the conversation came to a close, she shifted her focus to De Niro’s fervent remarks about Trump.

“I just want to personally thank you for doing what you do and for speaking out in the way you do about the state of the world,” Poehler said, her voice filled with enthusiasm. “There are many people invited to speak truth to power, but often they belong to marginalized groups—young individuals or people of color, for instance. It’s really something to see someone like you, with your status and age, stepping up. It’s kind of like when someone gives a horrible speech at a wedding, ruining the whole thing.”

“And in this case, the wedding is America,” she continued. “It’s important when someone calls out that behavior and says, ‘This isn’t how we treat people. This is insane.’ It creates a sense of safety for everyone, and I’ve seen you do this time and time again, so I genuinely appreciate it,” she added.

De Niro, visibly moved, started to tear up as he expressed gratitude for Poehler’s support.

“It means a lot to so many people because you’re advocating for those who don’t have the power to do so,” Poehler elaborated. “Thank you, Bob, for consistently standing up. I can’t believe I made you cry; this is such a turn of events for me. Just a moment, let’s get you some tissues.”

As De Niro dabbed at his eyes, Poehler took the opportunity to address the lack of opposition from “white men” regarding Trump’s actions.

“It’s true; there aren’t many men in your position who take a stand. Particularly white men of a certain age who hold significant power yet don’t seem to use it responsibly,” she remarked.

“It’s upsetting to witness what’s happening in this country, and it feels so surreal,” De Niro responded. “In some ways, it’s almost clearer because it’s so blatant. This situation is bound to repeat itself, and he will influence people, making them think, ‘I can act like this.’ We need to stay vigilant.”

He then reflected on the importance of courage in the fight against such issues.

“You have to fight; if you don’t, nothing changes. It’s essential to come together,” De Niro said, citing an example of someone named Jason Crowe, who pointed out that courage can be contagious.

“Negative feelings can spread as well, but why not promote courage instead? It’s worth trying; people might discover it’s not as hard as it seems, and they could help put an end to all this chaos,” he concluded.
