Video shows suspect dragging trooper from vehicle and taking cruiser on I-5

A suspect has been taken into custody after an incident on Christmas Day in Seattle, where a police officer was forcibly removed from his patrol car, which was then stolen. According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), a report had come in about a man wandering across all lanes of Interstate 5.

A WSP lieutenant found the individual while trying to resolve the safety concern and, amid the chaos, the suspect jumped into the patrol car and sped away, authorities said.

Footage appears to show the man approaching the marked vehicle, yanking the officer out of the driver’s seat, and driving off in the cruiser. The suspect, later identified as Alexander Eugene Smith, prompted a multi-agency response, including the Seattle Police Department. He initially drove north before turning back south, leading to a confrontation with law enforcement that resulted in the police striking the stolen vehicle to bring it to a halt.

Officers had to use a Taser to subdue Smith, who resisted arrest. Charges against him now include felony fleeing, robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle, assault on a law enforcement officer, and driving under the influence, as reported by the King County jail records.

Authorities noted that they’re investigating whether Smith was impaired at the time of the incident, with a warrant granted for a blood draw; however, the toxicology results are pending. WSP reiterated that safety is the top priority in such situations.

Interestingly, several vehicles were damaged in the chase, but while the lieutenant sustained minor injuries, fortunately, no civilians were seriously harmed. The investigation is still in progress, revealing the ongoing complexities and risks associated with such encounters.
