Trump’s Envoys Arrive in Russia for Peace Talks on Ukraine Conflict

On Saturday, envoys for President Trump landed in Russia with the aim of collaborating with officials to find a resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine, which the American president has been striving to address for quite some time.

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were reportedly set to unveil a new proposal related to the situation, as noted by CBS News.

During the G7 Summit in June, Trump expressed his concerns about the substantial loss of life occurring each month because of the conflict. He highlighted that both Russia and Ukraine have suffered significant casualties.

“It’s time for Russia to consider a deal,” he remarked, emphasizing the dire human toll of the war.

In an update, Trump shared with reporters that he dispatched the envoys with a plan aimed at ending the conflict, which escalated in 2022 when Russia launched its extensive invasion of Ukraine. Upon arrival, they were welcomed at the airport by Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev, according to Russia’s state news agency Tass.

“We have an idea for peace,” Trump told the press. “I sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, two great negotiators. They have done a great job, and they’ve gone over there to see if we can make some progress. There’s a good chance we might achieve something.”

This week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his hope to host the American envoys in Kyiv soon, as discussions for peace continue.

Interestingly, this trip is significant as it marks the first time that Witkoff and Kushner have traveled to Ukraine since Trump returned to office with promises to help resolve the conflict. Back in December 2025, the duo had a five-hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which a Russian official described as “constructive,” but it didn’t ultimately lead to any substantial outcomes.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated that Putin has ordered a halt to strikes on Kyiv, linking this decision to the preparations for Witkoff and Kushner’s upcoming visit to the city.

Previously, the last visit by Witkoff and Kushner to Moscow took place in January, where they met with Putin. While they have yet to set foot in Kyiv, Zelensky indicated he was anticipating their arrival in the Ukrainian capital on Sunday.
