Mother and Daughter Urged to Conceal Shirts at WNBA Game Amid Controversy

A mother and daughter from Georgia claim they were told to cover their XX-XY Athletics T-shirts while attending a WNBA game featuring the Atlanta Dream and Indiana Fever at the Gateway Center Arena in Atlanta. This incident comes as discussions around the inclusion of biological males in women’s sports heat up.

The mother, identified as Casey, recounted that during the game, security approached them and instructed them to conceal their shirts, warning that they could be removed from the venue. “In this game, we had to hide our XX-XY shirts. They gave us T-shirts during overtime and told us to leave or we had to hide our shirts. This just happened,” she explained, adding that both she and her daughter didn’t engage in any disruptive behavior.

“We just sat there. I didn’t sign. I wanted to make a sign, but I didn’t. I didn’t do anything,” she said, while an observer noted seeing someone on the jumbotron wearing a shirt with the words “Defend Transgender Rights.”

“She was the one who told us,” Annie, the daughter, noted. Casey expressed her frustration about this, mentioning that there was no necessity for anyone to zip their jacket to obscure their message.

A man behind the camera remarked on the situation, suggesting that the directive felt contrived, as if it was designed to maintain a specific narrative that lacked consistency.

Both Casey and Annie had spent roughly $1,000 on tickets to support prominent WNBA player Sophie Cunningham and to show their support for women in sports.

According to XX-XY Athletics, the apparel company associated with the T-shirts, “Women are entitled to the opportunities that sports and female venues offer. Biological sex is a crucial factor in athletic performance. Allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports creates an unfair and dangerous environment.”

The company further emphasized their belief that to maintain fairness in women’s sports, they must remain female-centric. They advocate for the truth regarding the distinction between biological sex and the realities of women’s sports.

In the game that night, the Fever narrowly defeated the Dream with a score of 95-91.

Reports indicated that WNBA star Sophie Cunningham had faced backlash for speaking out against allowing biological men in women’s sports. “I’ve received a lot of negative feedback about being labeled as someone who hates trans people. I never said that,” she responded, “I’m here to spread love, but I believe that love should also be honest. I want to safeguard the experiences of young girls in sports who shouldn’t have to compete against biological men.”

Recent discussions have highlighted the WNBA’s ongoing struggle to define what a woman is, with criticisms focusing on its perceived efforts to create divisions within the sport.

The mention of two former NBA players who claimed they could enter the WNBA draft simply by identifying as women has sparked further conversations around eligibility and fairness in competition.
