On Tuesday, Kevin O’Connell, the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, addressed J.J. McCarthy’s current role, announcing that Kyler Murray would be starting as quarterback.
O’Connell highlighted McCarthy’s potential, yet acknowledged that he still has plenty of room to grow. “He’s played only 10 games,” O’Connell stated to the press. “From last year to now, he’s shown improvement. Even during this training camp, you can see how much he has invested in his development. Every day he seems to get a bit more comfortable, which is encouraging. I’m genuinely excited to coach him.”
At the same time, the Vikings are making sure McCarthy stays prepared for any unexpected opportunities. “He knows he has the power to shape his own journey,” O’Connell added. “It’s important for him to recognize that while this is a long-term process, there can be moments that demand a quick response. I believe he’s up for it.”
McCarthy, who was picked tenth overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, hasn’t quite lived up to the expectations set during his time at Michigan. After missing the entire 2024 season due to a torn meniscus, he participated in 10 games last year. His record stood at 6-4, along with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Injuries hampered McCarthy in the previous season as well; he missed five games due to a sprained ankle, followed by a concussion and a hairline fracture in his throwing hand.
Given McCarthy’s struggles with consistency and health, the Vikings brought in Murray on a one-year contract after he was let go by the Cardinals, indicating a proactive step to solidify their quarterback situation.
