The four-time Pro Bowler happened to be wearing a microphone at the time. Cousins, whose microphone was out, initially believed he had simply injured his ankle. “Yeah, I got shot in the ankle,” Cousins was caught on microphone telling medical personnel immediately after the injury.
In a recent edition of the Vikings’ digital series “The Voyage,” Cousins detailed the moments following his season-ending injury.
“When I first got hurt, I didn’t think it was that bad because I get stepped on all the time. … It just felt like a heel stepped on me,” the 35-year-old quarterback said. Told.

Cousins went on to admit that he was in the negative as it was related to the severity of his injury and he thought he would only miss a few games.

“At first I thought, ‘Oh, it’s a sprained ankle. It’s going to be a tough next month with rehab, but I’ll be able to play. I’m a pocket passer,'” he continued. “I didn’t think anything was broken yet. I didn’t think the season was over yet. I just knew it was probably going to be over.”
“I was in denial,” he concluded.
At one point, a member of the Vikings’ training staff instructed Cousins to lean over so the quarterback could assist to the sideline. However, Cousins seems determined to join the bench on his own, saying, “I don’t want to use you. I just want to jump around.”

Trainers also asked Cousins to identify which part of his ankle was hurting. The signal caller replied, “Behind us.”
“I tried to go and my heel was pinned to the ground and someone stepped on me and I couldn’t get my heel off,” Cousins said once he got to the sideline. “So I was stressed out like crazy. When I went to go I didn’t feel anything. I just pushed and I didn’t get anything. There’s not much when you’re pushing.”

Rookie quarterback Jalen Hall was forced to sit out after Cousins was injured. As Cousins entered the blue medical tent, he gave some words of encouragement to the young quarterback, telling him, “You got Jalen. These guys are going to run the football. You got them.”
Hall finished the Week 8 game against the Green Bay Packers with 23 passing yards. The Vikings defeated the Packers 24-10.

Cousins ultimately missed the remainder of the season and underwent successful surgery to repair his Achilles tendon. He is scheduled to become a free agent when his contract with Minnesota expires in March.
“I knew what that meant,” Cousins said last November. “I’m out this year. I think the next time I’ll be on a football field will be in 2024.”
