Vikings Face Uncertain Future After Season

The Minnesota Vikings concluded their 2025 season at U.S. Bank Stadium without any playoff appearances, marking an end to an 18-game regular season. It’s a bittersweet moment for the franchise, as two beloved players might be saying goodbye.

Safety Harrison Smith and fullback C.J. Ham hinted that they might be nearing the end of their NFL careers. The mood in the locker room was heavy after coach Kevin O’Connell presented them with the game ball, reflecting their importance to the team and its supporters.

O’Connell detailed Ham’s impressive history with the Vikings. “Ten seasons, 141 games—the second-most by a runner in franchise history. He’s also a two-time Pro Bowler and a four-time team captain,” he said in a video shared by the team. “Having players like him is a rare privilege.” Ham then spoke passionately about his journey with the team, emphasizing his gratitude and desire to support his family more going forward.

“This game has been my life,” Ham shared, holding his young son. “Being part of this team means everything to me. It’s hard to leave, but it’s time for me to be a soccer dad and support my family.” His message underscored a strong bond with his teammates, promoting a sense of community.

Next, Smith took the floor. “I won’t take long, but this has been a lot of fun,” he began, managing to hold back tears. Even though the season didn’t align with his hopes, he expressed optimism about what lies ahead.

Drafted in 2012, Smith has been a cornerstone of the Vikings’ defense, racking up significant career stats. While he hasn’t formally declared his retirement, the emotional undertone of his speech suggested he might be contemplating it.

For Ham, his journey began as an undrafted free agent who joined the Vikings in 2016, moving from the practice squad to a prominent role. In the years that followed, he amassed respectable stats, making it to the Pro Bowl in 2019 and 2023.

As both players reflect on their future, the team’s history with them will undoubtedly be cherished by fans and fellow players alike.
