Minnesota Vikings Add Quarterback John Wolford
The Minnesota Vikings are making some adjustments in their quarterback lineup.
They’ve signed quarterback John Wolford to their practice squad, as announced this Wednesday morning, just before their Week 9 matchup against the Detroit Lions.
At 30 years old, Wolford joins the Vikings following a season-ending shoulder injury to veteran QB Carson Wentz, which occurred on October 23 during a game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With this addition, the Vikings’ quarterback room is primarily led by second-year player JJ McCarthy, who is poised to return after nursing an ankle sprain from Week 2.
Wolford’s NFL experience comes from his time with the Los Angeles Rams, where he played in seven games from 2020 to 2022, including four starts.
Interestingly, he will be reuniting with head coach Kevin O’Connell, who was the offensive coordinator for the Rams during Wolford’s tenure there. O’Connell was actually the coach during Wolford’s first start, where he notably helped the Rams secure an 18-7 victory over the Cardinals in the last game of the 2020 season, completing 22 of 38 passes for 231 yards, though he did throw an interception.
In speaking with reporters, O’Connell highlighted Wolford’s preparation and accountability, expressing confidence in his ability to perform well during games.
Interestingly, although Wolford hasn’t been part of an NFL game in about three years, he spent the previous season and training camp with the Jaguars. His time there included working with offensive coordinator Grant Wodinsky, who had previously served as Minnesota’s assistant QB coach.
As for the Vikings, currently sitting at 3-4, they’ll be looking to bounce back from two recent losses when they face the Lions on November 2.
