Vikings rookies J.J. McCarthy and Dallas Turner struggle with the first pitch

of Minnesota Vikings We drafted J.J. McCarthy and Dallas Turner in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft because they are both great athletes on the football field. Turner is one of the top pass rushers in this draft class and is coming off an 11-sack season at Alabama. McCarthy is one of a deep quarterback corps that is Michigan Wolverines We played in the national championship a season ago.

We bring all of this up just to highlight the fact that these are great football players, but they may not be cut out for a career on the mound.

All of the Vikings rookies were on Tuesday night. Minnesota Twins Turner and McCarthy threw the ceremonial first pitches at the game.

Turner stepped up to bat first and hit a throw over Twins third-base coach Tommy Watkins to the backstop, then McCarthy came next and threw a slider that dug into the dirt on the left batter’s side of home plate.

Another aspect of McCarthy’s approach is this:

In fairness, both rookies made a beeline for the top of the mound without attempting to throw closer to home plate.

As one Minnesota rookie summed it up:

“That was scary.”

For both Turner and McCarthy, they’re hoping things go better on the gridiron this fall.
