Maybe the reunion is something Kirk cousin needs.
After signing a four-year contract with the Falcons, the cousin is buried behind Michael Penix Jr. Linked by athletics to his previous team of the Vikings in the potential NFL Draft trade.
Quarterbacks Needy Browns and Steelers, who choose second and 21st in Thursday’s draft, are also considered veteran candidates.
However, there is skepticism about whether a Viking deal could come true by labeling Minnesota as the “most unlikely scenario” for three people.
Hesitant promises that 2024 first round picks JJ McCarthy and Cousins are “opposite” to send him to the team along with the young quarterback.
The speculative behind is that Cousins probably wants to be a backup for the team he enjoys success.
Cousins played for the Vikings from 2018-23, threw 171 touchdowns on that stretch before leaving his $100 million guaranteed contract with the Falcons.
Cousins didn’t expect the Falcons to draft his replacement in the first round of last year’s draft, and ultimately made him the bench in the first year of his contract.
Centre the backup quarterback position is important for the Vikings as McCarthy has not yet played the NFL snaps after suffering a knee injury last season.
He is not yet a proven product, considering their decision to communicate Aaron Rodgers’ interest in joining the team for all of the Vikings’ faith in McCarthy.
Minnesota has finished the 14-3 season and has the chance to compete again in the NFC, and if they leave the job to McCarthy without a solid backup, they could take the chance.
Sam Darnold led them to that record last year, but left for the Seahawks in free agency.
But it takes two to tango, but the question remains whether a team like the Viking wants to trade real assets for its cousin, or whether the Falcon is willing to play the ball.
There are cost factors for conflicting teams.
The Falcons are on Hook for his $10 million bonus in 2026, but the acquisition team will receive that salary. Backup $10 million salary isn’t a killer, but it’s not cheap either.
For the Falcon, it’s not as easy as moving from the sinking cost.
Cousins would prefer a fresh start in a situation where he could compete for the gig he started, which he “explained” to Atlanta, but the Falcons are not trying to abandon him.
“This is not something we are embracing (with cousins) if the opportunity presented itself (for trade),” said Falcons head coach Raheem Morris. PROFOOTBALLTALK. “If that’s good for both of us, that’s good for the Falcons and Kirk cousins – we certainly hope that happens.”
He added: “We invested in Kirk last year. We invested in some major ways. Now we feel really strong about him being our backup quarterback and what he can do for us.”
Athletic estimated that if a deal were made it would come on Saturday, the third day of the draft.
