Minnesota Vikings Strengthen Quarterback Room with New Signings

The Minnesota Vikings have recently bolstered their quarterback lineup.

After securing Kyler Murray on a one-year contract last week, the Vikings announced on Thursday that Carson Wentz has also joined the team on a similar one-year deal. Wentz served as JJ McCarthy’s backup last season.

This move adds depth to the team’s quarterback competition as Murray competes with McCarthy for the starting position, while Wentz is set to be a valuable backup option.

Wentz, who started five games last season, had the team at 2-3 during his starts. He completed 65.1 percent of his passes, totaling 1,216 yards, with six touchdowns and five interceptions. Unfortunately, his season came to an end due to a dislocated shoulder.

The 33-year-old attempted to play through his injury but eventually had to undergo surgery to address a dislocated shoulder, torn labrum, and a fracture.

With both Wentz and McCarthy facing injuries last season, the Vikings had to rely on undrafted rookie Max Brosmer for two games, which resulted in losses. Now, with Murray, Wentz, and McCarthy, the team seems better prepared to manage quarterback injuries—especially given that both Murray and McCarthy have had their share of injury challenges.

Murray was limited to five games last season due to a foot injury, and he has only played a full season once in the past four years. In 2022, he appeared in 11 games; he followed that up with eight games in 2023 and 17 in 2024.

Meanwhile, McCarthy missed his entire rookie season after tearing his meniscus in the preseason. Last year, he sat out six games due to a sprained ankle, a concussion, and a hairline fracture in his right hand.
