Hockenson’s Disappointment After Touchdown Reversal

TJ Hockenson, the Minnesota Vikings tight end, expressed his frustration after a pivotal touchdown catch was overturned in Sunday’s 28-22 defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles.

He believed he had secured the game-changing touchdown with just over three minutes left. Initially, the officials ruled it a touchdown, but that decision was reversed upon review. Minnesota still managed to score a field goal to narrow the gap to six points, yet they couldn’t regain possession afterward.

Hockenson was quite clear about his belief that the catch should have stood. “There was nothing to reverse that,” he mentioned. “I put my hand under the ball and felt it snag. I really don’t get it. At this point, it seems like I don’t fully understand the rules of a catch. How can New York make that call when there’s no proof it wasn’t a catch? I was clearly making a catch, and I find that ridiculous.”

According to Mark Butterworth, the vice president of instant replay, the ruling was based on Hockenson losing control of the ball while coming down.

He explained, “The play was ruled a touchdown, so it was up to replay to make a determination. We used enhanced footage to show he lost control on the way to the ground, which is necessary to complete the catch. The ball hit the ground, and then he regained control, leading us to determine it was an incomplete pass.”

If the touchdown had counted, it would have changed the game to a two-score situation.

In the game, Hockenson recorded six catches for 43 yards. However, despite the narrow margin of defeat, the Vikings squandered numerous opportunities, with quarterback Carson Wentz throwing two interceptions, one resulting in a pick-six.

With this loss, Minnesota’s record now stands at three wins and three losses.
