The Minnesota Vikings are stepping into training camp with an important focus on quarterback JJ McCarthy. He was their first-round pick but didn’t get to play last season due to a meniscus injury.
Despite the presence of other potential options, head coach Kevin O’Connell and the Vikings organization are backing McCarthy, a former Michigan Wolverines player. They have even brought in seasoned veterans, along with drafting another quarterback, which might overshadow McCarthy’s position as he prepares for the upcoming season.
After finishing the mandatory mini-camp, McCarthy seems to be making an impression on his teammates. He spent the last season on the sidelines, observing, but now, it feels like he’s ready to prove himself.
Hockenson, McCarthy’s teammate, expressed confidence in him. While attending the Tight End University summit organized by NFL stars, he said, “He’s one of the best people I’ve ever had. He’s eager to learn and improve. He’s really aiming to make a mark in this league.”
Still, the question lingers. What can the Vikings genuinely expect from McCarthy after a year away from competitive play? Coach O’Connell previously recognized the strengths of Sam Darnold, and perhaps they’re hoping McCarthy could replicate that sort of success.
Hockenson believes McCarthy possesses what it takes to excel. “He turns it on when he steps onto the field,” he noted. “He’s a perfectionist, and that drive is impressive.” Hockenson also praised McCarthy’s impressive arm talent, which had drawn some scrutiny during his college career.
“His throws are something else, you can just feel it. It’s exciting to see him in practice, and I’m looking forward to working with him throughout the season,” Hockenson added.
While Hockenson is busy honing his skills and connections at the Tight End University, he is also enjoying the chance to learn from colleagues and get to know them off the field. Living just a short drive away, he values the opportunity to engage with others in the tight end community, aiming to grow both personally and professionally.
“It’s great to be here with all these guys, soaking up knowledge. Building those relationships and learning from each other is what it’s all about,” he reflected.
