Vikings trade for Cam Akers amid Aaron Jones injury question mark

Cam Akers is headed to Minnesota.

The Vikings acquired the running back from the Texans on Tuesday in exchange for a conditional sixth- and seventh-round pick in 2026. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

The move comes as the Vikings' starting ballcarrier Aaron Jones is dealing with a hip injury.

Jones was featured in Minnesota's Week 5 win over the Jets and was described by head coach Kevin O'Connell as a “week-to-week player” during the team's bye week.

Pelissero reported He said the addition of Akers “does not reflect any long-term concerns” about Jones and said the veteran starter could play Sunday against the Lions.

Ty Chandler struggled as the primary running back in place of Jones, who left the game against the Jets, rushing for just 30 yards on 14 carries.

Akers, 25, has had some success with O'Connell's offensive scheme in the past.

He played for O'Connell in 2020 and 2021 when he was the Rams' offensive coordinator, and again last season when the Vikings acquired Akers in a midseason trade.

After signing a one-year deal with the Texans in the offseason, Akers appeared in five games with Houston this season, rushing for 147 yards and one touchdown on 40 carries.

He started two games in place of the injured Joe Mixon and ran for a combined 95 yards in both games.

In five NFL seasons, Akers threw for 1,728 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The Vikings will look to remain undefeated when they play their division rival Lions in Minnesota on Sunday.

Minnesota is one of two undefeated teams along with the Chiefs, defeating the 49ers, Texans and Packers en route to the all-time perfect record.
