Authorities in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas are waiting for information to uncover what happened to the mayor after a group of villagers violently abducted him from his police car. The villagers put him in another car and fled the scene.
The incident occurred this week in rural Chiapas, where Santiago El Pinar Mayor Alfonso Gómez Gómez was driving his police car on the highway connecting San Cristóbal de las Casas and San Juan Chamula. was.

After the villagers removed local elected officials, they left a police vehicle behind. Authorities have recovered the vehicle and are searching for the missing politician.
According to information from Mexico, AM News, the villagers were members of the indigenous Totsutsil tribe. No ransom demands have been made since then. None of the various indigenous groups and organizations in Chiapas have claimed responsibility for the abductions.
In recent weeks, Chiapas has begun to experience high levels of violence, with rival drug cartels beginning to clash in the region over control of the lucrative drug trade and human smuggling routes into Mexico. Chiapas is located on the southern border with Guatemala. It is considered a migration hotspot because it is where the majority of Central and South American migrants enter the country as they head north toward the U.S.-Mexico border.
