PITTSBURGH — Zibanejad Adjusts Amid Trocheck’s Injury

Mika Zibanejad’s plans for playing on the wing have been interrupted, as it’s been confirmed that Vincent Trocheck will be unavailable for the Rangers for a while. Trocheck is currently listed as week-to-week due to an upper-body injury, which he sustained during the second period of Friday’s shutout victory over Buffalo.

This setback represents a notable challenge for the Blueshirts, particularly since their midfield depth is already a concern.

“Replacing him is going to be tough,” remarked Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan on Saturday ahead of his return to Pittsburgh. “Trocheck is a talented player who plays in crucial situations for us. He’s one of the best faceoff men we have and is integral to our top six players as well as special teams. It’s not going to be easy to fill that gap, but it does offer a chance for others to step up and show what they’re capable of.”

“I think we have some potential to find balance and we’ll do our best until Trocheck is back,” he added.

After only two games and a whole offseason of contemplating Zibanejad’s placement, Sullivan decided to shift the Swedish player back to the top center role, a position he’s been familiar with during his time in New York.

Zibanejad had initially skated as a right winger with JT Miller and Will Quill in the season’s first two games, which was similar to his late-season role. This transition occurred shortly after the re-acquisition of Miller.

So far, Zibanejad’s performances in the opening matches have been promising—he’s managed to score and has displayed strong play over 60 minutes. Yet, some might argue that reverting to a center position could ultimately benefit the team in the long run.

On Saturday, Zibanejad teamed up with Artemi Panarin and Alexis Lafreniere. “I feel like balance is important,” Sullivan said regarding the lineup adjustments. “Having our top two centers, Mika and JT, paired with talented offensive players will help facilitate their game thinking. It’s a necessary move considering the situation.”

“Bringing Zibanejad back to the center made sense when Trocheck went down,” Sullivan noted.

Trocheck’s injury also ended his impressive 250-game streak, ranking as the 15th longest in NHL history.

His absence will be felt throughout nearly every aspect of the Rangers’ gameplay, including power plays, penalty kills, and the faceoff circle.

Lafreniere has stepped up to lead Trocheck’s power play unit, promoting Noah Laba to the second line alongside Quill, Connor Sheary, Matt Lempe, and Braden Schneider. Trocheck’s timeline for recovery remains uncertain, and an adjustment phase is anticipated.

“It’s really unfortunate,” Miller expressed about Trocheck’s absence. “He’s a key player and a leader on our team. Just not having him around is already hitting us hard. I know how much he contributes both on the ice and in the locker room. This gives other guys a chance to rise up and help fill the void.”

“We’re all going to need to push ourselves a bit more while he’s out, but his absence is definitely going to be felt,” he added.
