Sunday’s violence came more than eight months after Israel launched an offensive into the Gaza Strip in retaliation for the Oct. 7 terror attacks in which Hamas fighters killed 1,200 people and took hundreds more hostage.

As the war continues, critics point to the high civilian death toll in Gaza, rekindling anti-Semitism around the world. Some 38,000 Palestinians have been killed since Oct. 7, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Strip Health Ministry, a figure that does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

Israel disputes those figures, saying it is fighting terrorist groups operating in populated areas.
