Violet Affleck Advocates for Masks at the UN
Violet Affleck, the daughter of Hollywood stars Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, recently made an appearance at the United Nations in New York City. At just 19 years old, she spoke passionately about the ongoing importance of masks and other safety measures long after the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped lives globally.
She participated in an event called “Healthy Indoor Air: A Global Call to Action.” During her speech, Violet emphasized the need for continued mask-wearing to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. She stated, “It is neglect of the highest order to look children in the eyes and say, ‘We knew how to protect you, and we didn’t do it.’
She also pointed out a troubling trend among her generation, suggesting there’s a lack of accountability as society slips back into old habits, nearly five years after lockdowns were imposed.
“For adults, the relentless beat of ‘back to normal’ ignores the realities of airborne transmission and the risks associated with Long COVID,” she remarked. Violet expressed concern that the youth are not being adequately informed about important choices being made on their behalf. She concluded her address by advocating for recognizing clean air as a human right, much like clean water.
“We can create a clean air infrastructure that’s so necessary that future generations won’t even question why it exists,” she asserted. In May, Violet had penned an article in the Yale Global Health Review discussing Los Angeles’ response to COVID-19 alongside the climate crisis.
She urged comprehensive measures to combat the virus fully, advocating for things like masks, paid sick leave, and universal healthcare to ensure clean air. Additionally, she encouraged individuals to organize efforts to distribute masks to those in need.
Violet’s call to action resonated with her audience, reminding everyone of the profound impact of both public health measures and climate initiatives in shaping a sustainable future.
