Affleck and Garner Advocate for Mask Mandates at the UN

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner recently addressed the United Nations, emphasizing the need for mask mandates as a preventive measure against Covid-19, nearly five years after the pandemic initially shut down the world.

Their daughter, Violet Affleck, 19, delivered a heartfelt message at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday during an event titled “Healthy Indoor Air: A Global Call for Action,” while wearing a KN95 mask.

As a Yale freshman who entered during the post-pandemic era in 2019, she spoke to global leaders about the widespread ignorance regarding the ongoing pandemic. She cautioned that society had moved too quickly in relaxing mask mandates.

Violet expressed frustration with the older generation, stating, “We are constantly told that we are the future. But right now, the ongoing pandemic is stealing our present.” She criticized the adults for neglecting the realities of long-term Covid risks.

“Young people have been left without real choices or adequate information on this issue,” she added.

During her speech, Violet highlighted the dangers of SARS-CoV-2, noting that it can remain airborne in indoor settings. “One infection can harm almost every system in the body, from the brain and heart to nerves and blood vessels,” she stated.

She pointed out the increasing prevalence of long Covid, stressing that the long-term consequences of the virus extend beyond acute illness. “It has surpassed asthma as the most common chronic ailment among children under five,” she noted.

Violet warned that children can easily spread the virus in schools, leaving them fearful and facing a future filled with pain and fatigue. “I’m angry on their behalf. It feels unacceptable that we know how to protect them, yet we didn’t,” she lamented.

She underscored, “We have the technology to prevent airborne diseases and yet millions continue to suffer.” Violet expressed concern over the potential for long-term effects, pondering what future infections may mean for her generation.

Violet also drew parallels to the historical battle against indoor smoking. “As someone almost 20, I remember being confused as a child about the smoking ban signs on airplanes. Who would have thought that?” she reflected.

Her hope is that clean, filtered air becomes recognized as a basic human right, comparable to the fundamental necessity of clean drinking water.

“We have the chance to build an infrastructure for clean air, so that future generations won’t even question its importance,” she concluded.

Violet has been actively vocal about mask mandates, pushing for protective measures at LA hospitals and advocating for proper resources in preparation for potential future pandemics.

Post-viral conditions, often referred to as “long Covid,” can lead to prolonged symptoms lasting for months, including fatigue, memory issues, and difficulty concentrating. She has also contributed to discussions regarding coordinated responses to both Covid-19 and climate change.

As the eldest daughter of Affleck and Garner, who divorced in 2015 after ten years of marriage, Violet has two younger siblings, Seraphina (15) and Samuel (12).
