In an effort to honor the contributions of notable African Americans in the city's history, the Alexandria City Council unanimously voted to rename the first series of streets honoring Confederate leaders.
On Saturday, the City Council passed a bill to rename three streets and rededicate a fourth.
Alexandria has at least 41 streets associated with members of the Confederacy.
Among the streets being renamed is Forest Street, named for Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest, the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.

The measure outlines the intent to remove the R, which would simply result in a tree-like Forest Street, also within walking distance of Sycamore Street and Hemlock Street.

Another street name being considered for change is Early Street, named for Confederate Maj. Gen. Jubal Early, who led the attack on D.C.'s Fort Stevens during the Civil War. The proposed new name would be Harriet Jacobs Street, after the abolitionist and author of his book Incidents of the Life of a Slave Girl.
