Virginia Democrat Ghazala Hashmi Acknowledges Indifference to Children's Access to Sexually Explicit Content

Ghazala Hashmi’s Controversial Remarks on School Content

Ghazala Hashmi, a Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor in Virginia, expressed she is “not really concerned” about children accessing sexually explicit material in schools. These comments came during a 2023 discussion in a public education subcommittee concerning Senate Bill 832. This legislation aims to increase parental access to school materials and activities, allowing parents to challenge content in court if needed.

“We seem to be focusing on sexually explicit material. I’m not really concerned about that,” Hashmi stated during the hearing.

Hashmi’s campaign did not respond to requests for comment.

At the same meeting, Republican state Sen. Amanda Chase introduced another proposal requiring school libraries to label books containing sexual content, to help parents identify what is age-appropriate.

Representatives from the Virginia School Library Association and the Virginia Library Association opposed this idea, advocating for librarians’ discretion and suggesting that parents should oversee their children’s reading material.

Chase countered this by noting that many parents, particularly those with multiple kids, might not have the time to review every book, and labeling content would be a straightforward method to shield children from inappropriate materials.

Hashmi interrupted Chase during her questioning, stating, “I don’t think there’s going to be a debate,” before thanking the Virginia Library Association and encouraging opposition to the labeling proposal.

When there were no other comments, Hashmi elaborated on her concerns, saying, “Let me just say one of my concerns is violence… I care about children being exposed to gratuitous violence, not necessarily through books, but through social media. I think it does far more harm to children.”

These remarks gained attention after Republican lieutenant governor candidate John Reed announced he would not participate in a debate with Hashmi and instead held a mock debate with an AI-generated counterpart.

Hashmi’s campaign launched ads accusing Reed of trying to shut down public schools and redirect taxpayer dollars to private entities. Reed responded by calling the ad “false” and claiming Hashmi has consistently dodged the debate.
