Virginia Democrat: Trump bill will burden Republicans politically

Warner Critiques GOP Tax Bill as a “Political Albatross”

Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.) expressed concerns on Sunday regarding President Trump’s proposed tax and spending bill, labeling it a “political albatross” for Republicans when they return to their districts.

During an interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” Warner discussed the GOP legislation that recently passed significant obstacles in the Senate. Moderator Margaret Brennan highlighted that the bill includes various provisions that Democrats have defended.

“You can dress it up, but it’s still a political albatross,” Warner stated.

He pointed out that cuts to Medicaid and the Obamacare market could leave 16 million Americans without healthcare coverage, reverting to the uninsured rates prior to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

Warner emphasized that the repercussions of Medicaid cuts will extend beyond just those enrolled in Medicaid.

“These individuals are still going to get sick,” he mentioned. “They’ll just end up in emergency rooms. And the costs? Well, they’ll ultimately be passed on to those of us who have insurance, leading to higher premiums.”

Additionally, he criticized the bill for its reductions in food aid funding while significantly increasing national debt.

“Are we seriously cutting out hundreds of thousands of kids from school lunches and breakfasts in my state? They’ve slashed food bank resources. That seems quite cruel,” Warner remarked. “This is merely a move to ensure that the wealthiest Americans benefit from more tax cuts.”

Warner noted that his Republican colleagues recognize the contentious nature of this legislation, and he questioned whether those expressing surprise would stand by their principles.

He also mentioned that because the bill had not yet reached the president’s desk, it was still subject to changes. “It’s not done until it’s truly done,” he said.

While acknowledging Trump’s ability to unify his party on the issue, Warner cautioned that the ramifications of this bill could come back to haunt them.

“Ultimately, how does this serve America? I fail to see the positive angle,” he concluded.
