Virginia Republican Delegate Anne Ferrell Tata replies to Governor Spanberger

Virginia Republicans Respond to Democratic Address

Virginia Republican lawmakers have their own response to Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s Democratic rebuttal to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address. Notably, Rep. Ann Ferrell Tata, who is related to the prominent Founding Father Patrick Henry, made a statement regarding the situation. Tata claims her lineage traces back to Henry’s sister, a reflection of the early history of Virginia that often goes unnoticed.

Tata, in her remarks on the House floor, highlighted Henry’s famous declaration, “Give me liberty or give me death,” emphasizing that concerns about government suppressing the populace are longstanding issues. In addressing Spanberger, Tata criticized the partisan tactics involved in redistricting that appear to target nearly all Republican members of the Virginia General Assembly, positing that this represents yet another attempt by certain politicians to stifle citizen voices.

“A few years ago,” Tata recalled, “Virginia took a step many might describe as unusual, where we recognized that our old redistricting system wasn’t serving us well. Power had skewed towards politicians, while public trust dwindled.” She pointed out that voters had approved a constitutional amendment designed to take the power out of lawmakers’ hands, a move that Spanberger had previously supported. However, Tata argues that the current actions of the governor contradict that commitment.

She also noted that leaders in both Republican-led Indiana and Democratic-led Maryland have chosen to uphold similar voter protections, suggesting that perhaps respect for the rules shouldn’t be contingent on party lines. “Both chose to honor their promises to voters,” she stated.

Tata continued by stating, “Here in Virginia, the governor and his allies opted for power instead of reform. This transcends party lines; it’s about the value of the reforms we’re willing to fight for.” She lamented that leaders like Spanberger abandoning voter’s choices deepen public mistrust in the political system, saying, “Virginians deserve leaders who keep their word, especially when times are tough.”

On a reflective note, she referenced Henry’s warnings about government power encroaching on the rights of the people, stressing that this sentiment resonates loudly today. “Every voter, no matter their zip code, deserves an equal voice in this government.” Henry’s legacy, echoed in the current political atmosphere, is described as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance against governmental overreach.

Henry, remembered as Virginia’s first governor, has connections throughout the state, with his historical presence still prominent today. In his famous oration, he underscored the urgency of preparing for conflict when he declared, “I don’t know what others may choose, but as for me, give me freedom or death.” His words serve as a significant part of American history and are often revisited during commemorative occasions.
