On Sunday, a violent incident on a highway in Virginia resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals, following what authorities described as a highway “road rage incident” that escalated into a gang-related stabbing.
This unfortunate event unfolded southbound on Interstate 495, close to Little River Turnpike in Annandale, which is about half an hour from Washington, D.C. According to reports, one of the victims, a 39-year-old woman, died from her injuries, as did a dog involved in the situation. The suspect was also killed when officers responded and fired back.
Officials noted that this incident does not appear to be linked to terrorism in any way.
Virginia State Police reported that they received a call at around 1:17 p.m. regarding the road rage situation. They indicated that the stabbing occurred either just before or during their arrival at the scene. Upon investigation, police confronted a male suspect armed with a knife, which led to an officer shooting him in self-defense; luckily, no officers were injured.
The severities of the stabbing raised concerns, prompting a significant police presence and the closure of parts of the expressway. As stated by the Virginia Department of Transportation Northern Virginia Office, the express lanes of 495 were closed due to law enforcement activities surrounding the incident.
An investigation into the event is still ongoing, with both the Virginia State Police and Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office involved in the inquiry.
