Charity Walk in Brooklyn Leads to Cat Rescue
This past Sunday, during a charity walk in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, some participants stumbled upon a green Uber Eats bag tucked under a bench. At first, it seemed like just another discarded item, but curiosity got the better of them.
They decided to check it out, and to their surprise, they discovered two cats inside. It quickly became clear that these felines had been abandoned.
“I believe whoever left them wanted someone to find them,” said Dana Heis, a cat rescuer. “It seems like they had no other choice.” Not wanting to leave the cats behind, the group took the bag along as they continued on their 5-kilometer loop. As they walked, they encountered another person who found an orange cat—a third companion who had also been in the Uber Eats bag.
“By the end of the walk, they put all the cats down, and the orange one jumped right back into the bag with the other two,” Heis recounted.
The walkers contacted Heis, who promptly agreed to take the cats in. When they arrived at her rescue facility, it was evident they were quite anxious and apprehensive. Heis noted, “They were understandably nervous. It had been a rough day for them.”
She quickly got to work on their vaccinations and provided necessary treatments for fleas and worms. As the hours passed and the cats began to grasp their new safe environment, they started to unwind.
“They really seemed grateful to be indoors again,” Heis said. “It was clear they weren’t meant for outdoor living.”
While the story had a happy ending for these cats, it’s sobering to think of the other possible outcomes. There are numerous resources available for those unable to care for their pets, which should ideally be explored before leaving animals in public spaces.
“For anyone unable to keep their pets, the best course of action is to take them to a shelter or a vet rather than just hoping they’ll manage on their own,” Heis advised.
As for the cats, DoorDash has secured a long-term caretaker, while Seamless and Grubhub are still in need of someone to foster or adopt them. Given their charming personalities, Heis is optimistic they’ll find loving families soon.
“It’s crucial to me that they feel safe and loved, knowing they’re in good hands,” Heis expressed.
