Visitors Confront Illegal Boat Arrivals on Spanish Shore

Immigrants Detained After Landing on Southern Spain Beach

On a sunny Sunday at Sotiro Beach in Castel de Ferro, southern Spain, tourists found themselves in an unexpected situation as they intervened to detain a group of illegal immigrants who had just arrived from Morocco.

The day, initially peaceful, turned chaotic when 13 migrants reached the shore on a small wooden boat. As they disembarked and made their way onto the beach, nearby beachgoers quickly sprang into action, forming a human barrier to detain the immigrants until local authorities arrived.

A local restaurant owner shared that many were initially confused, thinking it was just a regular recreational boat. “We all stood there with no idea what was going on,” he recounted. “But when we saw people throwing items into the water and starting to come ashore, it became clear this was different.” He was particularly struck by how slowly the boat moved, almost leisurely, as if they were unbothered by the situation.

He mentioned that a similar event occurred on the beach last June, but the difference this time was a quicker response from bystanders. “Last year, they got away without anyone stopping them,” he noted.

Another local business owner described the scene, emphasizing how crowded the beach was at the time, filled with families and children enjoying their day. The police later reported that they apprehended nine migrants, who were believed to have crossed the Alboran Sea.

The detained individuals are being held at the Temporary Foreigner Support Centre in the nearby Port of Motril. Recently, Spain has been working closely with several African governments, including Morocco, to manage and reduce illegal immigration. Reports indicate that illegal arrivals to Spain’s Canary Islands have significantly decreased over the past year.
