Air India Flight Crash: Sole Survivor Shares His Experience

Viswashkumar Ramesh, the only survivor of a tragic flight crash shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad, India, described his survival as nothing short of a “miracle” in an interview with DD India. “I can’t really explain it,” he mentioned, still grappling with the shocking event.

The crash involved a Boeing 787-8 and occurred at London Gatwick Airport, as confirmed by Air India. The airline stated that there were 242 individuals on board, with a staggering 241 confirmed fatalities.

Details of the Incident

On that fateful day, Air India Flight 171, bound for London, met with disaster, leaving Ramesh as the lone survivor among the passengers. Although the airline didn’t disclose his name in initial communications, they characterized him as “a person of Indian origin residing in Britain.”

Reflecting on the aftermath of the crash, Ramesh recounted a harrowing experience: “When I woke up, I had a body around me. I was scared.” This chilling scenario left him distressed, as he faced the reality of seeing deceased passengers around him.

In a bittersweet moment, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ramesh in the hospital following the incident. The incident prompted Air India to express their deepest sympathies to the families of the victims, emphasizing their focus on addressing the needs of everyone affected.

Boeing also reacted to the tragedy. CEO Kelly Autoberg conveyed condolences and assured that their team is ready to assist with an investigation led by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau of India, following discussions with Air India Chairman N. Chandra Sekaran.
